Blog 1. Why do you think voting is important?

Hello everyone, I hope you find yourselves very well.

There is no doubt that to vote makes us the main character of the democratic system, since it allows

the people to freely express their will at the polls. It is evident that the evolution of democracy in our

country and in the world through universal suffrage has been a tool to maintain the legal order. If the

system does not work as an effective tool and if the people perceive that their needs are not covered,

they will in some way express this to the authorities.

In my opinion, what has harmed us the most in the democratic process in Chile is the Constitution of

1980, which became a true "straitjacket" in relation to the changes that our country needed in these forty

years and that has led to have a major social crisis such as the social outbreak that occurred on October

18th , 2019. In these demonstrations, the discontent of the people with the neoliberal economic model

was expressed, the social and economic inequality, the abuses of power and the cases of corruption

caused thousands of people to take to the streets to express their discontent.

Currently, direct consultations with the people, such as plebiscites, have complemented the democratic

system and the ballot.

The right to vote is one of the most important freedoms as individuals, it guarantees that we have a

voice and that we are listened to and when this does not happen the people are responsible for reminding  it.
